I am completely elated by the fact that my first book review is by one of the greatest writers on the face of the earth ,Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.(just see the how my eyebrows are furrowed into an attempted happy dance)
In the book Americanah, she tactfully crafts her words and molds them into eye candy for us readers to feast on.She invites us into her world where the curtains of her thought rooms drape with experience ,basically she keeps it as it is.
Synopsis. This book has its roots in a Nigerian setting and further grows beyond the boundaries of Home to a new “promised land”In United states. There seems to be war looming at home in Nigeria. This serves as a genesis for Imefulu the lead character in this book. This book spells out her teenage love affair with Obinze aka “ceiling” during the dictatorship war in Nigeria, her new woos of being a blogger on the topic of race before finally moving back home to fulfill the state of her heart affairs with the love of her life.
The use of words depicts the effervescent enthusiasm of an explorer,in this case, Ifemelu, a Nigerian female who leaves home to encounter the world that focuses on strange issues and to some extent the world changes her as she attempts to change the world.Quoting from Americanah”no longer did she cover herself with a blanket of strange naiveté as she flush with knowledge.”
She interacts with many Africans while pursuing her undergraduate studies in America.Years later she beings a popular blogger on “race issues”.She encompasses the culture shock in her blog and stubbornly refuses to adopt the accent but quickly picks up on the strong language.”Melanin is on fleek”while her heart is like a chess game, before she finally checkmates Cupid,is a series where Imefulu has no limits as she loves.Right from her high school boyfriend who she seemingly feels worthless to be with because of relaxation abuse by her employer ,to her new white man,Curt who literally washes her with words of affirmation and she reciprocates by cheating on him .But and later she meets Blaine, THE MAN among many men who adds a new twist to her story. She later returns home and is affirmative in the action of blogging.
I hate to give spoilers but down the memory lane she ends up with Obinze the love of her life ‘who by the way has had his fair share of life’s hard-knocks before becoming an extremely successful businessman in a newly Democratic Nigeria.
This book is an amazing read for lovers of love and travelling experience, and it left me wondering whether all we need is some more time, because it appears that is what heals all wounds.
